A Mountain View man, 24, was assaulted in his apartment complex yesterday with the assailants stealing his car in the process.

An assault happened in Mountain View yesterday, as a man, who's name has not yet been identified was attacked at his apartment complex and sent to a nearby hospital.  

3.  Where Lead:

In Mountain View, Calif., a man was assaulted by unknown assailants who then fled the scene in the victims car.

4.  How Lead:

A Mountain View man was the a victim of an assault yesterday, as unknown assailants beat the victim over and over with a toilet lid.  

 

5.  I believe the most appropriate lead would be the "Who Lead" because the victim is the most important part of the story and even though his name hasn't been released, he is still what the story is about.

Tunnel of Oppression

When we, my journalism class, were first told that we were going to visit the Tunnel of Oppression, I began picturing an actual tunnel with vivid pictures about racism and discrimination plastered across the walls. I must admit my expectations were very high.

As we walked to the Tunnel of Oppression as a class, we were met with a fairly long line. I wasn’t surprised as I was sure many others would want to see it. But I also wasn’t surprised when I found out the 30 or so students in front of our class were also there for another class, after all it was a learning experience, at least it should have been.

Before entering the actual Tunnel, we were met with hateful words splattered across the wall such as “sand nigger,” “dyke,” “cracker,” and many others. While these words have been used to spread hate and oppress the people they’ve been used on, I didn’t find it at all offensive. In all honesty I found them rather funny, and to my surprise, I wasn’t the only one. While waiting in line, a few of my classmates in front of me were laughing at the words on the wall and making a few jokes, I really couldn’t blame them though as I was doing the same thing in my own mind.

I consider myself pretty lucky though to never have grown up around such oppressive times thanks to the sacrifices that people made in the past. I’ve never experience racism or discrimination first hand, which does say that times have changed, at least here in the Bay Area.

When it was finally time to enter the Tunnel of Oppression, we were instructed to keep quiet as to not disturb the other people. After going through the entrance, I was surprised to see that it was no tunnel at all, but just a series of rooms put together. I guess it’s just because I’m a very literal person that this surprised me. As I also said earlier, my expectations were high and after looking and reading through the many panels of information on the walls, I was not impressed. In fact I was very disappointed. I don’t want to come off as a jerk, but I felt the presentation of the tunnel was horribly done. That’s not to say the people who ran this event didn’t work hard, but if they did, it sure didn’t show. Many, if not most of the displays looked like they came out of a fifth grade history project. Just like a cut and paste on colorful paper sort of thing.

There were positives to the experience though, a lot of information was available and I did learn a few things, but it just wasn’t presented well enough.

One room did really get to me and made me really think and almost cry. When I entered the fourth room, I was met with a model of a dead baby covered by a sweater splattered with blood. That was one image that I wanted to rid my mind of. It was definitely a sad reality that the deaths of murdered children and children carrying assault weapons was happening in our world today.

When the tour was all said and done, I must say I didn’t come away learning whole lot. Maybe I was being too negative, maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe I’m just really a racist. Either way I do hope the Tunnel of Oppression returns next year and learns from their mistakes and improves upon them. It’d be a waste if vital information as this got away from people because of bad craftsmanship and bad presentation.

Sports Broadcast

The streaks over as the San Jose Sharks lost to the Oilers 2-1 Sunday night in the shootout.

Dwayne Roloson in his second consecutive start dominated the Sharks with 48 saves and held them to one goal in regulation.

Sharks Captain Patrick Marleau had the only goal, and scored one more in the shootout.

It wasn’t enough as Robert Nilsson and Fernando Pisani both scored on Evgeni Nabokov ending the winning streak at 11.

The Sharks however still gained one point in the lost and increased their lead against Anaheim in the standings.

The streak may be over but the Sharks plan to increase their road-winning streak to nine on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings.

Sports Story

Performing to another sell-out crowd of 17,496 at the Shark Tank, the San Jose Sharks were unable to continue their NHL leading 11 game winning streak Sunday night.

The Sharks who dominated the Edmonton Oilers in all aspects of the game couldn't continue their streak as they lost in the shootout 2-1.

Goalie Dwayne Roloson was the definite hero for the Oilers as he stopped 48 shots and held the Sharks to only 1 goal.

"I think I've seen him at that level before, but I've never seen him better than he was tonight," said Oilers coach Craig MacTavish.

From a numbers standpoint the Sharks did everything right against the Edmonton Oilers.

They out shot the Oilers, out hit them and outplayed them to the very last second. But that wasn’t going to stop Roloson as he got his second consecutive start after getting 38 saves the night before in a win over the Phoenix Coyotes.

"It was no different than any other day," said Roloson, "I basically try to help my guys win. I can't control what the coaching staff says about who's playing. ... I was able to see most of their shots. Some I didn't see, and I got lucky. I was in position, and that was key."

Sharks Captain Patrick Marleau scored the lone goal for the Sharks on a 5 on 3 power play and also scored the only goal against Roloson in the shootout.

Oilers Right Wing Ales Hemsky also scored on a 5 on 3 power play against the Sharks tying the game at one a piece.

In overtime, Sharks Defensemen Brian “Soupy” Campbell threw his stick in disgust as Roloson stole another would be goal from the Shark.

The smile on Roloson’s face was completely visible even through his mask.

Oilers Forward Fernando Pisani scored the winning goal in the shootout getting it easily passed Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov.

"We had probably more chances than I can remember, and he made a ton of saves," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "Glove saves, stretch saves, split saves. He just had one of those nights. You thought he might be a little tired, but he hasn't played in about a month. We did a lot of things, but he robbed us."

Despite the Sharks first lost in a month, they gained a valuable point in the race for first in the extremely competitive Pacific Division.

The NHL point system rewards teams with two points for a win and one point for both teams when reaching overtime with the winning team gaining the second point.

The Sharks with 93 points are three points ahead of defending Stanley Cup Champions Anaheim Ducks and four points ahead of the Dallas Stars with two games in hand on both teams.

The trouble with hypocrites, I mean women is that you can never figure out what they want. A recurring theme among men is that “nice guys finish last,” and yet women say they want real sensitive and caring guys.

But why is it that women are more attracted to the guys who are obnoxious jerks? Now not all women want to be treated like a piece of meat, but so often I see women time and again falling for the guys that treat them like dirt while these women continue to stick around because she “loves” him.

Personally, if love means to be treated like dirt, then I for one would never want to fall in love.

Being one of those nice guys however shows no reward and no way out of this shell. With that said though, I like being a nice guy and actually treating the opposite sex like normal human beings, but I get no satisfaction in seeing the arrogant jerk always getting the girl.

I even tried playing the devil without a cause persona, but couldn’t keep up the charade for long.

I wonder if it's true that mothers tell their daughters, “You date the bad boy, but you marry the good one.” If women have to settle for the nice guy in the end, I’d rather stay single then be the one who was the safe pick.

So again I ask why do women fall in love with the jerk?

Story Outline

Idea: More and more students are starting to work in order to compensate for the increasing cost of gas, books, and tuition. Many of these students are full time students. How do these full time students manage to work 15+ hours a week, take 12+ units at San Jose State, and still have time to have fun and keep sane.

Who: San Jose State students that are currently enrolled in the Spring semester 2008 with a part time job and taking 12 or more units.

Pipe Fitter / Car accident Leads Excerise 5

Pipe Fitter

Direct Lead:

Duane La Chance, 55, suffered third-degree burns and was listed in serious condition Wednesday night after he accidentally touched a power line carrying 15,000 volts with a piece of angle iron.


Delayed Lead:

The job of a pipe fitter is one that usually isn't thought of as a dangerous job. Duane La Chance however, would say otherwise because as he was installing new pipes on the roof of a power plant, he was accidentally electrocuted and suffered third-degree burns.

Forty passengers were evacuated Wednesday from a Northwest Airlines jet at the LaCrosse, Wis, Municipal Airport.

Flight 128 was stopped as a landing tower employee spotted smoke near the wheels following a flight from Minneapolis.

Missing Boy

A seven year old boy was found Monday night in Brick Township. N.J., after been missing for three years.

The missing child who's picture was shown after the film Adam: The Song Continues, was recognized by a neighbor who then preceded to call the police. Officers arrested the boy's mother, Ellen Lynn Conner, 27, on chargers of kidnapping and interference with a custody warrent.

Introduction
